Someday soon, Winter Park's Park Avenue will do more than just look and feel like a quaint European village, and The Cheese Shop on Park heralds such a day. Like the european vendors on a marketplace street, the Cheese Shop cheesemongers are not jacks of all trades, but are masters of one: bringing Park Avenue a pithy sampling of the world's finest cheeses. The size of the shop does not warrant a large staff, and the shop benefits from this. It's hands-on owner/operators offer their knowledge of fromage as they serve up samples. What wine to pair? What food will complement? The owner/operators are happy to tell you -- and they always get it right. Someday Park Avenue will abound with such shops. Until then, at least we have The Cheese Shop. I recommend lunch, with its never-changing array of sandwiches focusing on the latest cheese offerings. Unfortunately, the Shop offers nowhere to sit, as it's cheese-focused owners are too intent on the fromage to notice even the extra-wide Park Avenue sidewalk in front of their shop, which could easily accommodate 4 or more tables. Oh well, but fortunately, Park Avenue's Central Park is less than a block away, and it makes for the perfect setting for enjoying The Cheese Shop's perfect array of gourmet cheeses.
